A new series of works by Tom McKendrick.

Engaged in the bonding game, welders spend their lives fusing together steel with an arc as bright as the sun and a temperature of 20,000 degrees fahrenheit.

Unidentified and regimented by profession, immersed in laser light and a blue fog, welders are attuned to a world on the extremes light and dark, eyes focused on a spark and a pool of liquid steel skillfully steered. There is also a feminine element...the yards of Clydeside employed women welders... a feminine aspect in a macho world.

The welders of Clydeside were legendary, many larger that life...The bulk of them evolved from the trade of riveting and were initially considered as traitors engaged in a practice that would pass.

They are portrayed here with humour, as gods...unapproachable and powerful... deity's shimmering in the darkness..helmetted to disguise their true identity and bearing the tools of their trade.
