I am Londoner who discovered Scotland whilst married to a serving soldier. Already a history addicted bookworm I began to share my husband’s interest in military history, then I came across Richard Sharpe and so began my obsession with the Peninsular War. For me research is as fascinating as writing fiction and what better excuse could there be for buying yet another book. Ten years ago writing ambushed me and I still cannot fathom where the ideas came from or why.

I became a member of Clydebank Writers about eight years ago.  I gave up painting to start writing, taking part in two ten week Workshops at Glasgow University with Donny O’ Rourke, which was very enlightening and helpful. With three published books of poetry I am now working on my fourth. Along with a body of work submitted to printed magazines, newspapers and online magazines I also have poems in writing group anthologies. I also perform at Open Mic nights which is scary but fun and as a writer I’m also an avid reader, mostly crime.

I joined Clydebank writers about 11 years ago. I love writing and listening to others reading what they have written. I studied HND acting and performance as a late student. Went on to lecture; I was employed by Reid Kerr College Paisley. I taught Special Need Students as an outreach lecturer. It was so fulfilling but hard work. When I retired I joined the Clydebank writers along with an amateur dramatic group (All Stars). I feel my two hobbies go hand in hand with each other.

I became a member of Clydebank Writers in 2022. Much of my time is spent doing voluntary work, helping others, which I find fulfilling and rewarding. I enjoy socialising at lunch clubs, gardening and visiting my local library. I find creative writing cathartic, providing me with the means to express myself in ways I may, otherwise, find difficult. The topics covered offer me the means to write fictional accounts of my life, past, present and future. Learning from other group members, enjoying their friendship and humour always makes for a great meeting on a Thursday afternoon.

Poems, stories have I written,
but not for life’s unfortunate,
people will my work be sold.
Lived all my life in Dalmuir, now I’m old.
Love writing, can’t take in reading well.
My memory’s, not good but not giving me hell.
Comfort home, family of writers,
civilised people, swearers, bunters.
Funny folk me, small as a garden
gnome but comforting hands always
held out, cool cool, writer’s group swell
swell swell, come, join and see for yourself.

I am a retired primary school teacher. During my forty plus years in the profession I was aware of how much young children enjoy being read stories and, during my early career read many wonderful books by some amazing authors to my classes. However, I soon came to realise that the children often preferred being told stories and I began creating my own story-lines, characters and situations, most often on the spot. When I retired at sixty, I began to write short stories, my favoured discipline, have dabbled with poetry to a lesser degree and have created short One Act sketches, usually written with tongue firmly stuck in cheek.

I've experienced many forms of employment over the years, including being a blacksmith in the famous John Brown's Shipyard. Comedy and humour are my favorite subjects and I'm attracted to ironical situations. I was part of a comedy team at one point doing 'stand-up', a occupation not for the feint hearted. My writing is not formal in construction, it is more akin to a stream of conscious thought...much like stand-up comedy.

Following a Clydeside tradition I was apprenticed at the age of 15 into John Browns Shipyard. I became a Loftsman, a now defunct trade. The essence of the trade involved making templates from a master plan that guided the steel trades in the building of a ship. Shipbuilding was a no nonsense game. It was dirty and dangerous and leaves its mark. Six years in the business gifts a wealth of stories and experiences. I’ve spent a long time interpreting those years in paint, hopefully, I can find the words to do the same.

I had been studying Early Childhood studies in various forms for 7 years and hadn't had the time to write for pleasure. Now I do and I'm loving it. My other interests are wild water swimming. Especially on Loch Lomond where the view of Ben Lomond is spectacular and an inspiration for writing of course.
